Intro.

I often get asked from beginners into affiliate marketing, whether they will be required to learn code to build a website. The basic answer to this is ‘no’, but code can come in handy.

In years gone past, it would have been more preferable to have coding knowledge, but with the advancement of WordPress and other content management systems, it’s now not necessary to know any coding.

Having said that, if you intend customizing your site to look a particular way, you may want to learn CSS and/or HTML. These are the two common website code languages that are used for customizing.

I’m not going to teach you how to code here, for two reasons. Firstly, I don’t know how to code myself! That’s not completely true, I do know small amounts of code to get by, but not much.

There’s a certain amount of simple code that I believe every website owner should know. This is what I will show you, and how to place it on your site.

For those beginners that are intimidated by code, I’ll show you why there’s no reason to be deterred or scared.

I will show you some essential code snippets.

Centering Just About Anything

I’m going to use centering as an example, to show how effective tags can be.

When using WordPress to create an article, you’ll notice the icon for centering text or images, it has 3 centered lines. This is the ideal method to center just about anything, but sometimes it just doesn’t work.

It may be a video or other type of media that you’ve placed into your article. Here’s the solution to have your object centered.

By default, you’ll be writing in the ‘Visual’ tab. Switching over to the ‘Text’ tab will display the code that makes up what’s already in your article.

How to Learn Website Coding Visual tab

The basic code I want to get across to you, are the ‘tags’. This is where you have a tag at the beginning, and at the end of something. For instance, let’s say you want to center an image (which isn’t playing ball through the center align icon).

Firstly, when you switch to the ‘text’ tab, you’ll see the image code which will look something like this:

<img src=”https://newonlinecareer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/image1.jpg” />

You’ll place a <center> tag before your image code, and <\center> at the end of the image code. When you switch back to the ‘Visual’ tab, your image will be centered.

This is exactly what happens when you click that ‘center’ icon, it just adds these <center><\center> tags to whatever is highlighted to be centered. eg:

<center>This text or image will be center-aligned.</center>

Many other bits of code can be utilized from tags, these are the most basic form of code that you can learn as a website owner.

Other Code That May Interest You

Internal linking is well known as an SEO factor, giving Google reason to boost your posts. Adding internal jump link code helps with this also, and can be implemented when you give your readers an opportunity to jump down to a certain place in the article.

The Best Place to Learn Code

The first place I’d recommend to learn various languages of code, is w3schools.com. This would be the most comprehensive website in regards to learning all types of code.

W3schools

What I really like about w3schools, is the ‘do it yourself’ area. This is where you can put into place, exactly what you’ve just been taught from a tutorial. It allows you to see the result of the code you’ve written, and will give you indications of whether you got the code wrong.

Udemy

Another great place to learn code is by doing a course on Udemy. Udemy is a platform that allows anyone to create a course and upload it. For a small cost, you can download the course to view when it suits you. There are some fabulous courses on coding here, created by excellent tutors.

Wrapping Up

In my opinion, all website owners should learn a little coding. It will naturally come with website experience anyway, as you discover new ways to display certain elements.

At the least you should get your head around tags, which are used in simple text and headings. This type of code is not scary, far from it. And you’ll see the benefits as soon as you start using them in the ‘text’ tab on your articles.
