Intro

Growing up in a family of musicians can give you a leg up in terms of entering the music industry, and for many of us, the guitar has been a huge part of our lives. Unfortunately for many including myself, we’re not clever enough to progress to the elite stage and join a successful band.

But we can do the next best thing and stay in the guitar business by selling and offering advice to others that intend being the next Slash or Santana.

This advice I’m offering doesn’t just work for selling guitars, it could be any musical instrument of choice, or even other band equipment.

So here’s my opinion on how to make money selling guitars online for those either successful or not in the industry. This could be a great side project for those that have been retired for a number of years but still have an interest.

Selling Your Guitars or Someone Else’s

The Guitar Store

Your passion may extend to making your own guitars or importing them. If this is the case, then you’d probably sell products via your own online store. This can be a great way of earning larger profits, as you’ll be able to name your own price for each guitar.

Dealing with manufacturers direct is going to be your challenge, but perfectly achievable. Some manufacturers will only deal with certain retailers whereas other are a lot more forthcoming.

Setting up a store is not too difficult but there are several things you should know about. Although it’s possible to use a general website with SSL certificate (Secure Socket Layer), you’ll be required to add a payment gateway to take orders and payments. Alternatively, set up a store using BigCommerce or Shopify. These companies give you a ‘store website‘ which is hosted with them.

Obviously, as your store is hosted by these providers, there’s an ongoing fee to run your shop with them.

Other things to be aware of, is the fact you’ll have to deal with shipping, taxes, returns and complaints. This is no different to any other online store, it just depends on the type of person you are as to the model of selling you prefer.

The Guitar Affiliate

The second model available to you, is the affiliate method. This is where you promote guitars, and have your readers sent to purchase them externally. All you need is an affiliate link from an online music store merchant to add to you promoted products.

I won’t go into too much detail about the affiliate marketing model in this article, but you can read more about both these methods of selling products this this post titled What is a Way to Make Money Online. This option does alleviate the issues explained in the store model in regards to shipping, taxes etc.

Both are legitimate options and can earn you either great profits or good commissions.

Your Guitar Niche of Interest

If you’re going to enter this niche of the musically minded, you’ll need to understand that there is a fair amount of competition. Not as big as the most popular blog topics, but there is a passion for guitarists to enter this domain.

Having said that, this is your passion so I’d fully support your following this niche. There’s no point entering a venture where you have little interest. Using your existing knowledge is the best way to get started, because you can pass on that information to your new audience. You already have content to write from about experience, which will get ranked in the internet search engines.

Getting Your Audience Interested

As I previously mentioned, your great content that you’ll be writing to get your knowledge across to your readers is what is going to drive your website. It’s going to be the foundation of your business going forward and be the reason visitors will come back.

Written content is your best chance of gaining free website traffic as it will be organically ranked in the search engines. Getting a foothold into any niche can take a little time, unless you’re ready to pay for traffic through advertising. That’s totally up to you, but my advice is to build a strong base for your business with great articles.

Teaching/Tutor

You can also write about how to play the guitar and your experiences with various models of guitar. As we know, each stringed instrument is different and has their own uniqueness.

Write a guide for beginners to start playing or upload your own music. Tutoring can be so beneficial and will keep your visitors returning for more information. If you offer small amounts of training, you may be able to create a fully downloadable PDF as a giveaway in exchange for their email address.

You can then use your readers email to promote offers in future. This is known as email marketing.

Music

As I just touched on, write sheet music that beginners can practice with. You could have a drop down menu with different levels of sheet music that your audience can leverage.

Another great tip would be to upload videos of how to play the guitar. This could be your tutoring or someone else’s. Videos are a great engagement tool and they also keep visitors on your website longer. Keeping readers on your posts for longer periods is a great ranking factor also.

News

What about the latest news from guitar manufacturers, players, stores or entertainers. If you do decide to add news items or information, don’t copy it directly from another article. This is known as duplicate content which search engines such as Google frown upon.

Instead, read the news article and provide the information in your own words. You can also add a link to the original article, which is also great for SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Events/Gigs

If your blog or store is localised, you may promote local bands and gigs. You may have a few favourite guitar players that your audience would be interested to know when, and where they are always playing.

Maybe add a calendar to your site with dates and venues they are performing at. Maybe even add your own gigs if you’re good enough.

Parts or Repairs

If you know how to tune a guitar masterfully, you could always offer these services. The same goes for repairing faulty guitars or supplying new or used parts. This may be your speciality, being Mr Fixit for all the local guitarists.

This can be big business because not everyone can afford a new guitar every time they have a fault. Many people just require a tune up or small modifications to their 6-string.

Become Partners with Affiliates

If you intend to go down the affiliate route as opposed to the physical store direction, you’ll want to sign up to affiliate programs of the better musical stores, maybe even specific guitar merchants if you can source them.

These companies are going to pay you a commission, every time you send a referral their way, and they make a purchase. The more affiliate programs you sign up with, the more opportunities you’ll have to promote.

Keep in mind though, that keeping track of too many affiliate programs can become tiresome. Begin with a couple of affiliate programs, and add a few more once you start making money.

By joining affiliate programs you are doing a service to all concerned. You will enjoy any commissions that are earned by sending your readers to a merchant. The merchant company is happy to take the sale and pay you the commission, and the purchaser is also happy to buy what you’ve recommended. It’s a win-win all around.

Branching Out Into other Areas

Although your initial website is all about guitars, you may choose to branch into other areas in the future. I certainly wouldn’t advise this in your first few years, as you’re building a reputation in the guitar niche.

Once you’ve established yourself as an expert in the guitar niche, there’s no reason you cannot start to promote other instruments, and earn extra commissions from these opportunities.

Remember, when you start out, you’ll have more than just guitars to promote anyway. What about other accessories such as guitar cases, piks, cables, acoustics, stools, sound systems, sheet stands, microphones and more.

Progression will come with the longevity of your site.
