The Affiliate Marketing Process Explained
I suppose the best place to start is by clarifying the process of how affiliate marketing works. I’m shortly going to give you a step by step procedure, but in essence you’re playing the middleman in the transaction of a sale.
In doing so, you’ll be earning a commission from the company you’ve helped gain a new sale. Simple right!
I’ve been asked in the past, is affiliate marketing a pyramid scheme? The answer to this question is no, not at all. There is a big distinction between affiliate marketing and pyramid schemes.
Firstly, pyramid schemes are illegal because they encompass recruiting people into a circle of money, with no actual products changing hands. Affiliate marketing on the other hand is a very legitimate activity of promoting other people’s products. This in turn earns you an income.
So, by enticing people to make a purchase via your own online asset such as a website, everyone is a happy camper. Your website visitor is pleased with their purchase, the merchant company you’re partnering with has made a sale, and having made a commission yourself, the full transaction is complete.
So, apart from making commissions, what other benefits are there to affiliate marketing.
Why Would You Become An Affiliate Marketer
To be honest, the real question should be, why wouldn’t you! Admittedly, affiliate marketing is not for everyone. If you’re the type of person looking to make a quick buck online, then I’d advise against this type of venture.
Affiliate marketing is a long term journey, and once you’ve done the initial hard work to begin, there are wonderful benefits that await.
Employment Freedom
Because of the nature of online selling, you’re basically becoming a person of the laptop lifestyle. Sure, you can still work from the comfort of your home study, but I like to head off to a coffee shop with my laptop.
In fact, as my wife works in the big smoke, you’ll often find me waiting for her in an alfresco bar along the river, pint of beer in hand. There’s nothing more enjoyable than watching city workers go about their business, while I have the freedom to either write another blog, or pack up and watch the world go by.
Great Commissions
I’m able to do this because the returns that affiliate marketing can give me, can be quite generous. Not as high as the profits you can make setting up your own dropshipping store, but still good nonetheless.
Commission rates can vary a lot, so it pays to check what is available to you. Some high ticket products or services will usually only offer a smallish percentage, but because of the product cost, the commissions can be quite large.
This may be something you want to keep in mind when deciding on a niche topic to start your affiliate marketing business around. Some affiliate programs can offer commissions as high as 50%-60%, which is just a tremendous rate.
Affordable Setup
Another great aspect of the affiliate marketing route, is the initial cost to begin this journey. Unlike setting up a physical store which could well run into the tens of thousands, affiliate marketing may cost you a few hundred dollars per year to run.
This is quite incredible, because it’s quite conceivable that you could end up earning thousands of dollars per month, all on the back of a couple hundred bucks outlay.
In fact I can’t think of another business opportunity that can offer such an affordable opportunity. I’ll touch on the costs soon to give you a better idea of what you will be up for in dollar terms.
Scalable To Your Liking
Depending on your motivation and ambitions, you could take this online affiliate marketing business a very long way. Once you’ve mastered the cheapest website traffic models being SEO and social media posting, you could venture down the paid advertising route.
Some people do this before they are making a profit, and that’s fine. But if you’re just starting out with not much money, this is something you could do down the track. I’ve heard of people spending tens of thousands of dollars per day on paid advertising. They’d only be doing this if they were getting a good return, so just think about the profits they’re making.
There’s a good chance you may have heard about PPC marketing, CPC marketing or any of the other forms of paid advertising such as solo ads. These are all the options available to you as you progress further into your enterprise. Then again, you don’t even need to learn this. Getting your articles ranked in the search engines could make you enough money to make a full time living.
To be honest, I don’t like calling this an online business because it makes people think they need to have studied business management to succeed. This is totally not the case, which is why you may just prefer to call it your blog. You’ll still make money regardless, and you only need Google spreadsheets to keep your account management under control.
How Much Does Affiliate Marketing Cost To Begin
To get started in affiliate marketing, there’s only a few basic requirements that you will need. Here’s a list of the basics:
- Website Hosting
- Domain Name
Yep, that’s about all you need to get a website up and running. Obviously there are some optional extras that you’ll no doubt add as you get further into this journey, but as a basic blog, this is it.
So what do these things cost? I’ll start with a domain name, which will generally cost between $8-$15 per year. That’s not really going to break the bank is it. Tip: I suggest getting Whois domain privacy which will keep your domain registry details private.
Now you need a hosting company to store all your website data. This is known as a hosting provider. When it comes to website hosting, you can get the cheapest for approximately $7-$8 per month. This is adequate to begin, but you may want to get this upgraded when you start to get more website traffic. Bluehost can get you setup on one of their shared hosting plans rather cheaply.
The only problem with shared hosting is that your website will be sharing resources with hundreds or even thousands of other websites. This can slow down the loading of your site, which can become frustrating for your audience. This is why a better plan would be a better option down the track.
Joining up to affiliate networks doesn’t cost anything, so you can sign up and begin adding affiliate links to your website as soon as you’re up and running. I’ll touch on affiliate networks and affiliate links soon, as you may have no idea what it is I’m talking about if you’re new to all this.
How Much Money Can You Make With Affiliate Marketing
Well, this all depends on how far you’re willing to take your affiliate marketing blog. You may elect to keep this small enterprise as a hobby, just earning spare change to spend on the weekend.
Then again, you have the option to build this up through your hard work, with the potential to earn thousands of dollars per month. Of course, this all depends on the amount of effort you’re willing to invest.
One of the questions often asked is, can you get rich from affiliate marketing? While I’m loath to suggest this can’t happen, it’s more unlikely than likely. That doesn’t mean you cannot earn a great living out of affiliate marketing, it just means the chances of living in a palace from affiliate marketing is slim.
I would like to point out that no online activity will get you rich within a few months, unless you buy a lottery ticket online. However, those that have been affiliate marketing for years could well be earning much more than those in a traditional job.
What Do I Need to Start an Affiliate Marketing Blog
I’ve touched on the basics you’ll need to get started in affiliate marketing, but there will be other items that will help your progress. Such things can include an autoresponder for building an email list, and then sending out emails to this list.
I use several tools to help with my affiliate marketing, which you can check out by visiting my ‘Top Affiliate Marketing Tools’ page. This will show you that I spend under $3 per day to run my online ‘business’. Not bad hey.
The Affiliate Marketing Setup Process in 8 Steps
Okay, so as a newbie, you’re interested in understanding the steps required to become an affiliate marketer. Here’s a brief outline of how the process works.
- Create a blog/website
- Choose a niche topic about what you’d like to inform people about on your blog.
- Write informative content for your audience
- Sign up to affiliate programs
- Get links from affiliate programs, and add them to promotions within your articles.
- When a visitor reads your article and clicks on your affiliate link, they will be taken to the online store to purchase the product you promoted.
- If that same visitor makes a purchase, you are recognized as the person who initiated the sale via the unique code in your affiliate link.
- You will earn a commission after the visitor makes a purchase.
As an example, let’s say I wanted to promote a password protection app which can store people passwords securely via encryption. It just so happens that I do promote this product, it’s called Keeper, and you can see it in my sidebar down the right hand side of this page.
I have an affiliate link connected to this image, so if somebody clicks on it, they’ll be taken to the Keeper Security website. If this person decides to buy Keeper for themselves, I will earn a commission.
Affiliate marketing is a simple process, and something that anyone can easily learn.
Choosing a Topic to Blog About
For some, choosing a niche is an enjoyable task because they know exactly what they want to write about. Many people have an interest they know a lot about, and therefore have just been waiting for that perfect platform to jump on to.
Unfortunately for many others, finding that ideal niche to blog about can be tough. Although you have interests, you may not know enough to write about on a consistent basis. This can be overcome though, by learning more about your interest or passion
There are some very popular niche topics, which you can read about here. You don’t want your niche to be too broad because the competition becomes much tougher to compete against.
In my opinion, you want a niche that interests you, is targeted towards a large enough demographic to make enough sales, yet not too broad.
This could be a hobby, general interest or even just something you’d like to learn more about. It’s possible to learn as your going along, which is sort of how I started this site back in 2018.
Also, make sure you’ll enjoy what you’re writing about. And have fun.
Physical Products, Digital Products or Informational Services
When most people think about affiliate marketing, they assume the selling of physical products is what takes place. And you’d be right is thinking this, but there’s also alternatives.
Services are another thing that you can promote. There’s all types of services you can sell, like just about any service that would be in the old yellow pages. For instance, you may have a gardening website, which provides you with the opportunity to promote local lawn mowing services.
Maybe you have good knowledge of heating and cooling systems, and you can promote air conditioning services. The list of services is almost unlimited, and these types of service companies will really appreciate your partnership.
On top of these, are digital products. Many course creators upload their courses to the web in digital format. They are aggressively promoting their courses, but can always do with the help of affiliates.
I do a lot of product reviews that culminate in the promotion of these types of courses, which net me a good commission. The commission rates for these courses are generally much better than physical products, usually in the vicinity of 40%-50%.
So have a good think about the subject of your website before you begin setting up. Although, you can always start a second website if you get the first one wrong.
Make Sure There’s an Affiliate Program
A large consideration when choosing a niche, is you must have the opportunity to earn money. This means that there should be enough affiliate marketing programs, to promote enough products or services. Without this, you may be stuck promoting the same old products, that maybe don’t sell that well.
It’s simple to find out if a company has an affiliate program. Most websites have a ‘search’ facility, which allows you to search for their affiliate program. The majority of companies that do have an affiliate program will have a link to it in the footer of their website.
While just about any niche will have affiliate programs associated to it, don’t just assume. You don’t want to get 2 months into a new website, only to find that you are limited by monetizing opportunities.
Beginning Your Affiliate Marketing Journey
You’re about to embark on a special journey that could allow you to become independently financial. This is an exciting time. In fact as I sit here and write this article, I’m watching the world go by with a bottle of Stone & Wood golden ale. Here’s proof! You too can reach this point as an affiliate marketer.
I want to make you aware that no affiliate marketing journey is easy. Like most things in life, you’ll have ups and downs. But the main reason people don’t succeed is because they expect results too early. If results were going to be that easy, every man, woman and dog would be successful at this.
The journey you’re about to undertake is unique, and only those with consistency and perseverance will survive. Trust me, I failed over 10 times before I realized the effort required to succeed. That doesn’t mean it’s difficult, it just means most don’t last the distance, and give up through lack of motivation. The concept is easy, but there’s an element of longevity to be successful.
So, strap yourself in for a journey that will give you that life you desire. Work hard in the initial 12 months, and the results will come. You’re building a long term sustainable future here. You may have a long time until retirement, or just know there’s more to life than sitting in a work cubicle for years to come. This doesn’t have to be your future life, but only YOU can change this.
Grab the bull by the horns, and make that change you’ve been longing for.

Creating a Blog
It all starts with creating your first website. You may have already done this and been unsuccessful, if so I’d urge you not to give up so easily. As I just explained, it took me well over 10 websites to become a success.
So, to create your first blog, you will require a domain name and hosting. Buying a domain will be the first point of call, but make sure you know your niche first. Once a niche is settled on, you can think about what you’re calling your domain name.
Find a domain registrar and purchase the domain. Popular domain service providers include GoDaddy, Namecheap or BuyDomains.
Before I go too far, and you head off and buy your domain at one of these registrars, I’d like to alert you to a platform that I use. It’s called Wealthy Affiliate and encompasses a lot of what I’m suggesting you need here.
WA teaches affiliate marketing, has integrated tools that can help your progress, offers hosting and domains, and also has a large community of support. They also have a website builder to make creating your blog easier.
If you’re after an all in one solution that is also extremely well priced, check out Wealthy Affiliate for FREE for a week. I’m an active member there, so I can help you with anything, should you get stuck.
Okay, so you’ve decided on a domain name, now you need website hosting. Most domain registrars nowadays will also offer hosting. Well known hosting services include Bluehost, SiteGround or Hostgator.
If you purchase both a domain and hosting from the same provider, you’ll have an easier time setting your website up. If not, you’ll need to point your domain to the hosting provider by entering in DNS names.
Hosting providers do make the setup process simple enough, but using the website builder at Wealthy Affiliate is an even simpler option.
Your First Affiliate Marketplace – Amazon
This doesn’t have to be your first affiliate marketing program, it’s just the most common and widely known. So I figured I’d touch on it.
Can you really make money as an Amazon affiliate? The amount of times this question gets asked on Google is astounding. The answer of course is yes, but the commission rates are not the greatest.
At roughly 7%, Amazon does not have the best commission incentive, especially as many of their products are low to mid range prices. Although different parts of the Amazon Associates program do pay differently. Some will offer more that 7%, but more likely slightly less.
Amazon Associates is where you can sign up to the Amazon affiliate program. Amazon is the largest online retailer worldwide, and pays out billions in commissions each year. Signing up is easy enough, although you’ll need to receive an automated phone call to progress.
Once signed up, you’ll have a large selection of promotional options within the Amazon affiliate program site.
One thing to be aware of is that you will need to make 3 qualified sales within your first 6 months to be accepted to participate further in their program. If you don’t get these 3 sales, your account will be closed. However, you can simply reapply immediately after account closure.
The only pain in the arse part about this, is changing all your affiliate links to your new links.
(As an update, Amazon have recently reduced their commission rates dramatically. I’m now of the opinion that other stores like Etsy would be a better option).
Understanding SEO
You don’t know what SEO is? Well, as an affiliate marketer, you’re going to have to learn. SEO stands for search engine optimization, and is basically how search engines determine where articles are ranked. You want to know this because it’s your FREE source of website traffic.
Much of this depends on Keywords. A keyword is the search term that is entered into a search engine such as Google. A keyword is not necessarily a single work, it’s usually multiple words, but is still known as ‘a keyword’.
Google’s algorithms pick up the SEO factors that you’ve used in an article to rank. For instance, let’s say you want to rank for the keyword ‘skateboard replacement board’. You’ll want to place this full keyword in several sections of your article, along with variations of this keyword. You’ll also place it in your URL and tag your images with this keyword also. This all helps to a better ranking in the search engines.
Wealthy Affiliate will teach you all about this in their training.
Writing Product Reviews
A big part of any affiliate marketing campaign should include writing product reviews. The reason for this is because when people read product reviews, it’s the most likely time they will make a purchase.
There’s such a thing called a customer purchase life-cycle, which culminates in the last stage where potential customers go searching for product reviews just before they’re about to buy.
This is where you as an affiliate marketer should be taking advantage.
Writing product reviews are not particularly difficult, but you do need to research the product beforehand so you can advise your readers with correct information. If you just make up a load of crap to sell a product, you are doing your audience a disservice.
You can read more about writing product reviews here, and get a handle on why these are your best chance to get those elusive sales commissions.
Comparison Sites
Another good method of gaining product sales is to compare various products against each other. This is a form of product review because you’re pointing out the pros and cons of each product, so your readers can easily assess if this is the exact product they’re after.
Comparison sites like this can be easier for many people to digest, rather than reading large slabs of actual content. Most people are visual by nature, so displaying information in bullet point format can be easier to consume.
Not only can this be good for your audience, but you may find it’s easier for you as an affiliate marketer. Not everyone enjoys writing lots of content, but I’d still suggest you have a written spiel about each product.
Informing Your Audience
It’s important to make sure your number one priority is to inform your audience. This is how you build trust, and a good reputation as an authority figure. It’s also how you’re going to get repeat customers.Â
If you bought something online as a result of a product review by somebody else, and everything they suggested was accurate, you’d use their opinion again. So this is exactly what you should be doing, informing your potential customers with precise and accurate information. At least as much accurate information as you can get.
As I briefly touched on earlier, if you don’t provide relevant and correct information, there’s not much chance of that person returning to you for advice.
So, provide good value, informative content, correct guides or tutorials, or other accurate info, and you’ll please your audience.

Signing Up To Affiliate Networks
You’ve heard me mention about affiliate programs, but what about affiliate networks. These are entities in their own right that look after multiple affiliate programs for various companies.
So instead of going directly to a company that you want to partner with, these affiliate networks may be hosting their affiliate program for them. The use of a facility like this can lessen the burden on a company’s resources.
There’s many well known affiliate networks that you can join, with each encompassing loads of affiliate programs. Here’s a list of just some:
- AWIN
- FlexOffers
- Clickbank
- ShareaSale
- CJ Affiliates
- Linkshare
- eBay Partner Network
- JVZoo
There’s many other affiliate networks, with some specialising in specific niches. For instance, MoreNiche targets health, beauty and fitness niches.
Most affiliate networks will accept multiple niches, and you can then search affiliate programs by category. You’ll usually find filters to find the exact type of affiliate program suitable for what you are offering.
The great thing about affiliate networks like these, are that you can promote several affiliate programs via the one network, and manage all your income via one platform. This is the big advantage affiliate networks have over individual affiliate programs.
Direct Affiliate Programs
The alternative to using affiliate networks is to go directly to the merchant company to see if they have an affiliate program. In fact a great way to find affiliate programs for a specific product via Google, is to search for this:
affiliate program+product
For instance, let’s say I had an electronics website and wanted to search for affiliate programs that sell digital radios. I could enter into Google this search term: ‘affiliate program+digital radios’. This would be the search results:
As you can see above, a selection of affiliate programs will appear in the search results. One of these affiliate programs is via an affiliate network (FlexOffers), the others are affiliate programs that are run directly via the company website.
Working directly with the company via their affiliate program may be a better option for those with a more local targeted audience.
Promotion Through Social Media
So as you’re probably aware by now, you’re going to need website traffic to make any sales commissions. So how do you get this website traffic? As I’ve partially explained, SEO is a big part of this, and offers you free traffic.
Another form of free website visitors is via social media. You’ll have loads of platforms where you can achieve this, with Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest being the major players.
Even if you’re not a big Facebook user (because Facebook is for old folk like myself!), it’s still worth setting up a Facebook Fanpage to align your website with. Once you’re deeper into your affiliate site, you may find this is the ideal platform to promote the type of products you’re attempting to get sales for.
Instagram and Pinterest are also great for promoting, although not all social platforms allow affiliate links. Instagram is one platform that does not accept affiliate links, but you can add a website link to your bio (profile page).
Facebook does allow affiliate links, and Pinterest has changed their rules in regards to this several times I understand, so by the time you read this, you may need to check before trying it out.
We all know social media is a big part of any business these days, so do not neglect this form of free promotion.
Watching Your SEO Rank Rise
Once you’ve been at this a little while, you’ll start to get some real joy when you see your articles ranking in the search engines. This is a buzz when it first happens, even though you may not be getting much website traffic.
Over time, you’ll get more and more articles published, with many of them working their way to page one for the keyword you’re trying to rank for. This is all down to learning the SEO techniques that places such as Wealthy Affiliate teach.
As you can probably guess, the more articles you have ranking in high positions in the search results, the more website visitors you’re going to receive. And this is what affiliate marketing is all about, getting more eyeballs checking out your offers.
So, watching your website rankings rise is going to happen if you do this correctly. Google doesn’t discriminate, and everyone is on an even footing. Those that have been doing this a long time however will have more GA (Google Authority), and therefore have earned the right to higher rankings.
You’ll be in this position too, once you’ve worked hard enough. All these competitors out there started at the same place you are, at the beginning of the journey. It’s those that DON’T GIVE UP that will be the victors.
Including An Autoresponder
You won’t have to do this when you first begin your affiliate site, but as you start to gain more visitors, it’s a good idea to build an email list. You may have heard about marketers doing this, and wondered what they mean.
There’s a saying that goes ‘the money is in the list’. Basically, the more emails you can capture from people visiting your website, the more you can promote offers to them in the future.
To do this, you use an autoresponder service. Simply link your website to this service and they will store your emails lists. Then create emails via this autoresponder service, to send out to your new list subscribers.
You can see in my sidebar on the right hand side, a signup box where you can grab my ‘The Ultimate Beginners Guide to Making Money Online’. This is linked to my autoresponder service called Aweber.
I wouldn’t sign up to an autoresponder service until you’re getting enough website traffic to utilise it.
Sales and Specific Dates
Specific times of year are going to give you much joy from bringing in loads of sales. Xmas, Black Friday, Boxing Day, these are all ideal opportunities to promote what you’re offering on your website.
There’s sales nearly every month of the year these days, and when done right, you can promote to various demographics at the correct time of year. People are always on the lookout for sales and many just don’t know how to resist a bargain.
This is your opportunity to take advantage of those with money to spare. If they are going to spend money on these sales anyway, you may as well be the one to help them make a decision, and earn commissions for your efforts.
Payoneer has a free eCommerce calendar you can download from their website, displaying all the dates you should be aware of. You can grab it here.
How Do You Get Paid From Affiliate Marketing
So when payments come through to affiliate networks, they’ll hold your money until payment day, which will be on a specific day each month. Your total from all affiliate programs will be paid at this time.
Payment type basically depends on the affiliate program you’ve signed up to. The majority of affiliate programs and networks will offer PayPal and/or bank transfer, some offer alternative payment methods.
Amazon currently has 3 payment methods which are different. Bank transfer, cheque or Amazon gift card. Note that Amazon will send their cheques in US dollars to many affiliates around the world, so you should check that your bank will accept this.
I found a good way to work around the Amazon payment method for those with international accounts, it to set up a Payoneer account. Payoneer works well with international payments and you can use this bank account as your primary Amazon payment method.
Managing Your Day to Day
Will you have to worry about managing your day to day tasks as an affiliate marketer? Yes, how else will you keep organised. How else will you remember what you’ve written about and what product reviews you’ve already done.
Once you’re starting to get sales and conversions, you’ll have accounting to keep abreast of. You’ll have affiliate links that you may use on multiple article, so keeping these at hand is valuable.
There are many ways you can do this, but I find that using Google Sheets is good enough for this purpose. I use a Google spreadsheet with multiple tabs. This helps with my post scheduling, accounting, Affiliate links and even future blogging ideas.
Of course you could transfer your accounts to an accounting program down the track, but it’s not really that necessary if you can set a spreadsheet up correctly.
Affiliate Marketing Can Take Time
Now for some honest truth. Becoming an affiliate marketer can take some time. It takes time to learn, time to build a foundation and time for search engines to rank your articles. But…the time is going to go anyway!
What else are you going to be doing. Looking for another get rich quick opportunity that will scam you out of your hard earned money. I’ll just repeat the comment I made. THE TIME IS GOING TO GO ANYWAY.
So, make use of this time, and imagine where you’ll be this time next year. Work hard in the initial stages of your online venture, and the results will come down the track.
Is affiliate marketing easy? This is a two part question as far as I’m concerned. Learning how affiliate marketing works is fairly easy. Being patient and not earning money while waiting for your online business to take off is hard.
If you are determined to make this online career for yourself, you’ll keep plugging away until that amazing moment comes. And all the work you’ve done will certainly be worthwhile.
Now Get Your Affiliate Blog Started
Well, I hope you get something out of this affiliate marketing guide. The main things you should take away is that anyone can do this, but it does take effort and time to succeed.
There’s a good chance you have time on your side anyway, and you don’t want to get 2 years down the track and wonder what would have happened had you taken the plunge. You could have 10 years until retirement. I’d rather work hard after work hours for 12 months and enjoy the laptop lifestyle for the remaining 9 years.
As I’ve stated within this article, the best place to get started is by signing up with Wealthy Affiliate. All the training, resources, tools and support will be available at your fingertips. You’ll be able to use their website builder to have your website up and running within 1 minute.
I appreciate you taking the time to browse this article.

The opinions in this article are solely mine, are are not intended to offend or discriminate. All information in this review has been researched on the public domain of the internet.
I wanted to ask you, can we write blogs of different niches under one common website? Will this affect in ranking of my website?
The direct answer to this question would be no.
Search engines need to understand what your website is about. Writing about different niches does not provide the search engines with this information, and instead will confuse the algorithms.
That doesn’t mean you cannot write about similar niche ideas.
For instance, if you begin a blog about bass fishing, you can later start to expand and include other types of fishing. Maybe then start to add fishing boats.
Hope this makes sense.
Hey Nudge,
Thank you for the most important piece of content. This is exactly what I was looking for. I just had one doubt, I have heard from people that to rank up your website, you have to include the niche keyword in your domain name. Is this how it works? Awaiting your reply.
Thanks.
I don’t believe this to be the case Shweta.
Several years ago this was thought to be true, but the search engine algorithms rely more on constant informative content these days.
So in my opinion, I would not worry too much about having the keyword in your domain name.
Thanks for the kind comments by the way, much appreciated.
Cheers
This post is very informative and easy to read. I personally have been with WA since 2019, and between creating content for my blog, working part-time, and family, I just had to chance to study the remainder of my WA courses. However, your post reminded me there are still some things I don’t know or have forgotten. In a nutshell, you gave me a refresher course on what I should be concentrating on regarding my blog.
Especially how Amazon has lowered its commission rates so much, luckily for me, my blog is more informative, and most of the products I review are digital. Therefore I will be giving Click bank a try very soon. I actually got tired of writing reviews for Affiliate Marketing because of a lot of stuff I already knew. However, your post was like a breath of fresh air because it was like a pep talk I truly needed. Thank you so much!
Thanks for your thoughts Moody. Appreciate the kind
Thank you for an in-depth look at Affiliate marketing, looking at all the tools needed and the options available.
I would like to ask if wealthy Affiliate is shared hosting as you explained regarding Blue Host?
You mentioned $7-$8 per month for hosting per site, this would make Wealthy Affiliate a better option.
What do you think?
Correct Kavinah.
The web hosting at WA is managed hosting. This is better than the traditional shared hosting because they remove many of the features that you generally wouldn’t use from the typical Control Panel. So all of those useless tools are removed, andyou’re left with the tools that are directly related to your WordPress website.
A wonderful post Nudge. Basically in this guide you said everything you need for a beginner in affiliate marketing. For those who do not have patience and want money immediately it is not recommended. I agree with you that WA is by far the best way to memorize an online business. It offers everything you need to succeed. Carmen
Thanks
Wow! loads of information in this article; as an affiliate marketer for sometime now I realized I have-not scratch the surface yet in order to see an income. I can see how helpful this article can be for any person wanted to get into affiliate business, this is a great guide for them, and me too.
Appreciate your kind words, and glad this article could
Thank you Nudge for a well-written article. I appreciated that you stressed the importance of being patient when building up your affiliate business, but eventually it will pay off. Yes, it is important to have a realistic view and what you can expect going through the process. You were also right about having an autoresponder but not until you get enough traffic to your website. Many good nuggets in this article.
All the best
Goran
Appreciate your thoughts Goran.
The concept behind affiliate marketing is really simple. If you redirect people to our site, we will pay you some money for whatever they purchase.
This is definitely viable. If you were to go through all the people you know on a personal level and ask yourself how many of them are doing this, the answer might most likely be none.
On top of that, there are an endless amount of products to promote and niches to produce content in. The whole world is your market.
You make a good point in regards to the people you know doing affiliate marketing. I personally know of none, apart from the community I’m involved with at Wealthy Affiliate.
This shows that there’s still opportunity for anyone to begin this kind of venture, and
I’ve been an affiliate marketer for several years now. Am I successful? Not by a long shot. I mean I make money yes, but it’s not an income I can live off yet. I loved all your links. There are several that I am going to check out. So I’ve bookmarked this post, so I can do some investigating. Great information you have compiled here!
Thanks for the compliment Leahrae. I hope you can take a lot out of this
I LOVE your article! It’s informative, comprehensive, and written pretty well. I especially like your section titled “The Affiliate Marketing Process in 8 Steps”. If a visitor reads nothing but that section, they will be 10 steps ahead of most who dare to delve in the Affiliate Marketing Game. Speaking for myself, I wish I had come across your article when I was starting out in this business. It would have saved me lots of money and heartache.
Thanks William.
Although I have a good grasp of what I’m writing about, it’s always nice to hear from actual readers that I can help out. Everyone has their own writing style, and assumedly, my style resonates with my audience.

Hello Nudge
Thanks so much for sharing your know-how and tips on how to start affiliate marketing for beginners. I know many people would love to get started, earning that extra income but the fear of creating a website stops us.
I know the first time -I considered affiliate marketing was in the early 2000 but the thought of creating a website stopped me, I’m not a computer wizard I`m not that tech-savvy, how could someone like me create a website and sell affiliate products?
I wish I had read a post like yours back then that explained everything in detail as you did here, but back then, even people promoting affiliate offers kind of “did not know how the system really worked”.
In your post, you mention selling physical products or digital products, If I could start all over again, I`d sure only concentrate on digital products, less refunds as compared to physical products. But then, there is something for everyone, not everyone wants to create a site that only deals with digital products.
Well written and everything explained that anyone can understand, thanks, really appreciate you sharing this.
Cheers Roamy
Appreciate you kind words Roamy.
I think may of us have had failures before success, I think this is just part of the process. We all learn from our mistakes, and this is how we get to become more accomplished at what we do.
You have certainly done your homework with this article! It does take time to build, create content, and rank in the search engines. Learning how to use SEO properly takes time and you will often have to take another look at it. Google changes the algorithm during the year to better the results. It may take a person some time to regain their ranking.
Affiliate marketing in one of the largest businesses in the world with millions more joining affiliate marketing companies. The ones you pointed out are some of the best in the world with marketers from around the world.

Thanks Jerry
You bring up a good point in regards to Google changing their algorithm each year. The idea behind this is to better serve users when searching for a keyword or search term.
So the more you work on your SEO, the better.
A very excellent and detailed described process of starting affiliate marketing in the article How to Start Affiliate Marketing From Scratch in 2021.
I joined the Wealthy Affiliate a few months ago as a complete beginner and started with the first steps followed by affordable training. I don’t have the results yet, but I am aware that every business must first be built from the ground up to start knowing the results.
Thanks for all the helpful information in this article! I also highly recommend the Wealthy Affiliate platform.
Friendly greeting,
Nina
Thank you Nina.
You’re correct that we all need to start at a base level before the rewards will come. Keep at it thought and you will see the
Literally, this is the perfect article for me. I am a newbie who is trying to get into affiliate marketing and I have no idea what I’m doing. But it is great to know that there are honest articles on the Internet like this one that actually give me some great insight on what I should be looking for and what I should be doing. I appreciate this article
You’re welcome Midel, I’m please my efforts to write it are not in vein.

Hey Nudge. Very interesting article. I’m just starting my adventure with affiliate marketing and posts like this are extremely helpful. There are so many useful tips on your blog that I think I will be reading it for weeks. I already created my own site, looking forward to test your advices in practice.
Appreciate the kind comments Cogito.
Yep, I’ve added many tips to keep in mind when starting your affiliate marketing journey from scratch.. Hope they help you and others.
Thank you very much for writing such a complete guide for affiliate marketing. I’ve been looking into affiliate marketing as a way to make additional income (and hopefully, full-time income) during this pandemic period. I just created a blog with gaming as my niche. I’ll check and compare all my steps with yours. However, I want to ask if you have a certain benchmark or milestone guidance as a measurement for a successful affiliate marketing blog. For example, a blog should earn a certain amount of dollars after a certain period of time. Is there a benchmark for this thing? Thanks
Thank for dropping by Alblue
In terms of a benchmark, you really want to be checking your analytics. How many visitors you’re getting per day. The more visitors per day, the more chance of making money.
This will all vary depending on how competitive your niche is, so determining a dollar value is very difficult.
Just keep working at it and you’ll see your visitors begin to rise over time. You want to give it at least 6-12 months. The money will follow.
Thank you for sharing your affiliate experience with me. There is much useful information adding to my knowledge. Reading your article is like going through the WA course again. I understood how to source niche info, where to get free traffics, and better ranking from SEO.
In reality, it is not simple for normal people to know exactly how it works for the website. If we have more than 100 posts, still unable to bring up the traffic, we have to go for other niches like you; even our posts are indexed and ranked well by SEO.
I hope I have a strong determination like you for success. Your proven success in Affiliate Marketing is a strong driving force for us to continue our journey. Thanks again, my senior; I wish you more success in 2021.
Thanks for your kind comments Stephen.
Sometimes it depends on how competitive your niche is, which determines how quickly you’ll gain enough traffic. For a competitive niche like mine, 100 posts is not really enough.
If you’re in a non competitive niche that has a smaller target market, the chances of better rankings for the keywords you use are much higher. It may only take 50 posts in this instance to gain good website traffic.
Keep at it Stephen, you’ll get there.
I remember when I first started out myself. It was not easy to find out where to start and how to start and if it was smart at all to start with affiliate marketing. Today I do not regret it for a second. For A newbie I think Wealthy Affiliate platform offers most value in terms of training, websitebuilder, hosting, SEO tools , domain shopping , blog and having an awesome helpful community. Do not underestimate the power of a community.
Your top Affiliate marketing tools is a great list. I use many of these tools myself. From the start you do not need an autoresponder. Only an email provider. E commerce sites can be quite costly and complicated for a newbie, so I think keeping it relatively low cost and simple from start is crucial. You can expand as you go. WA offers you all you need from the start. With Premium membership you can build up to 10 websites which is more than enough for most marketers. Great Review. Enjoyed reading it – You surely showed how it can be done!
Appreciate your kind comments Hilde.
You’re so right when it comes to appreciating a community that you can call on, for any issue that arises. Many friends are also made through the WA community, but the value comes from the many forms of communication.
Whether it be live chat, personal direct message, profile message or just asking a question to the community, you’re sure to have any issue solved.
Cheers
Definitely agree with you on the affordable part, I remember focusing so much on creating a product when I just started online. Turns out creating your own product takes up a lot of time and money which isn’t really a good choice if you’re a beginner and haven’t gotten yourself familiarized yet.
Affiliate Marketing on the other hand, doesn’t cost us anything for the product as we can basically leverage the product developer’s exposure which they had put all their effort in. I wish I knew that earlier, would have saved myself a lot of time 😀
I’m with you there Riaz. I had high ambitions at the beginning to possibly sell my own products, but this is the best opportunity because you can sell everyone else’s products. Once you have an established website selling products that others own, you can choose to create your own products also. Win-win.
