We’ve all had the feeling that the job is getting us down, and it’s time to move on. Often we get through this period and get back on the horse, but sometimes we are just determined to make a change.

Not everyone knows what sort of career change they’re after, just that they want either a new challenge or a new start. Often the thought of “I want to quit my job but don’t know what to do” will creep in, but you understand that you still require money.

This is what can make the change more complex, as you will still have bills to pay. So, what are your options and how can you make this adjustment?

You really want to make sure that you’re formulating the correct decision before handing in your resignation. The reasoning for quitting your job must be strong and legitimate. You don’t want to think one month down the track, that you have second thoughts.

While I’m not a career advisor, I understand the responsibilities you need to consider, especially if you have a family. So, think long and hard, and consider the implications of what a career change can bring.

As many of us get older, we opt for a more leisurely career path. So instead of being on the tools as a tradesperson, we may choose an online career. And that’s what I’ll be discussing in this article.

Online or Offline Options

Okay, so you have the choice of learning an online skill, or working in a coffee shop. By that I mean there are multiple places you can get a job but will not pay the best rates.

Because this website discusses various methods of making money online, I’ll give you some options that may interest you. Firstly though, I want you to know that these options are not “get rich quick” opportunities. They are legitimate long term sustainable methods that have been proven to earn decent money, if done correctly.

I would advise that some online skills will be needed, but who doesn’t have some sort of computer skills these days. So let’s get straight into some of the better online options that you can get involved with.

Oh, and just one other thing. I’ve mentioned about not giving up your day job until you’re sure about a change! I also want to iterate that these choices can take some time to set up and gain traction. So, I’d urge you to begin whilst still in your traditional job.

Don’t give up your day job until you’re earning a decent income from one of these sources. As you earn more, it’s possible to drop down hours as you go along. This is the best way to transition.

Yes, sometimes you need to go backwards to go forwards. This will probably happen financially, but also educationally. It’s hard to expect anyone to just setup any of these enterprises without the correct training.

Become an Affiliate Marketer

One of the easiest methods of beginning your own online journey. Affiliate marketing is extremely cheap to begin with, and simple to get started. Having said that, if you use SEO (search engine optimization) as your primary website traffic strategy, it can take time to get traction.

For those that have no idea what SEO is, it’s using search engines such as Google to rank your articles. This is the cheapest and best long term tactic in my opinion to get traffic.

So, what is affiliate marketing? Basically, you’ll be promoting other people’s products with the intention of earning commissions when you get a sale. For instance, lets say you create a website about barbecues. You sign up to the BBQ’s Galore affiliate program so that you can promote their BBQ’s.

You’ll be given a unique affiliate link, which can be attached to your promotional images or text. If a visitor to your website clicks on this link, they will be taken to the BBQ’s Galore website to possibly make a purchase.

If that person buys the BBQ, or anything else on the same visit, you’ll earn commissions from the sale.

To give you an example of what is possible, I promote some digital courses on this website. One is about learning how to dropship products on Amazon. The course itself is brilliant, but does cost $997. Because I’m an affiliate for this course, the course creator pays a 40% commission. So you can guess how much commission I make from each sale. Yep, $398 USD. That’s a very good commission rate, especially when I convert it to Australian dollars.

Your Own eCommerce Store

As an alternate option, you could consider setting up your own online store. This eCommerce option is usually created through a platform such as Shopify or BigCommerce.

If you have a passion for a certain type of product, or even invent your own product, why not sell via your own store. Another option which is extremely popular these days is dropshipping. The dropshipping model consists of promoting products on your website, that you DON’T stock as inventory.

There’s no need to store any inventory, which is a real bonus. So in reality, you’re promoting items that can be found on dropshipping suppliers websites, such as AliExpress. These dropshipping sites are very cheap, as the manufacturing is often done in China.

Give your product a price that will earn you a decent profit. If you make a sale from your online store, the transaction will take place, and therefore the customers money will be transferred to your account.

It’s then up to you to purchase the product/s from the dropshipping supplier, and have it delivered directly to your customer.

Because you can set your own price, it gives you the possibility for larger profits. The trade off is that you’ll have more housekeeping to do. Invoices, customer service and returned items are all part of the eCommerce experience, but some of this can be automated.

Dropship on Amazon

I’ve spoken about the dropshipping method of selling on your own store, but this can also be done on various other platforms. Instead of having to create your own Shopify store, you can create a store on the Amazon platform.

While this will save on Shopify costs, you’ll have to pay Amazon fees instead. Depending on your situation, you may find this a more cost effective method.

There is much to learn when selling on Amazon, it’s not as simple as placing products and hoping people search them. Amazon has their own algorithm that will place products in the search results according to various factors.

That’s why it’s always good to get educated before finding out that your products are not selling, and you have no idea why.

Yep, it’s always a courageous decision when you want to quit your job but don’t know what to do. You’ll have financial considerations to take into account, and there’s a balance that you will have to weigh up.

These online career change solutions will hopefully give you some idea of what is out there. Of course there are other ways to make money online, like becoming a course creator or home travel agent.

I wouldn’t recommend filling out surveys or going down the sweepstake route. These are not consistent forms of income and the returns are very poor.
