What is an Instacart Shopper?

With very little time on some people’s hands, it stands to reason that some of them will opt to have their grocery shopping done for them. This is where Instacart Shopping comes in, as they can offer this service for specific customers.

So with the requirement for this shopping need, there’s also an opportunity for you to become their grocery shopper. Instacart offers opportunities for anyone to sign up and shop for preorders.

This could be the elderly, disadvantaged, disabled or anyone that just doesn’t enjoy grocery shopping. They need their food delivered, and you can help with their order.

These orders are not limited to one grocery store either, with several affiliated stores signed up to work with Instacart. For instance, I searched the area of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Here’s the stores that you could be shopping in.

Instacart Shopper Driver Stores

For those that find this an attractive role, note that all employees work part time, but can work up to 29 hours per week in scheduled shifts. This can be an ideal solution, and certainly fill any spare time you may have throughout the day.

There’s certain criteria that must be met to become an ‘In-Store Shopper’, which is listed below.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age, or older
  • Valid eligibility to work in the U.S. or Canada
  • A smartphone with Android 5.0 or later, iOS 9 or later (may change as this post article gets older)
  • You must be able to lift 30+ pounds without help

This criteria is fairly easy for most people to meet.

What is an Instacart Shopper Driver?

For those with more flexibility to get around, a better option could be to become an Instacart shopper driver. Obviously you’ll require a valid drivers license to have the ability to fill this role, but it means you won’t be stuck to the single store to complete orders.

This is known as the ‘Full-Service Shopper’, meaning you’ll not only do the shopping, but also delivery to the customers house. I really like this option as it allows for some interaction with customers, which they may be craving.

Additional criteria to become an Instacart Shopper Driver is stated below.

  • A functioning, registered vehicle
  • Vehicle insurance, in accordance with local laws
  • Current driver’s license

One of the added bonuses of delivering the goods to the customer is that you get to keep 100% of any tips offered.

Who Uses Instacart Shoppers?

There’s two sides to services like Instacart. On the one hand there’s the customers who use the service to get groceries to their premises. Then there’s the contract employees that do the shopping and make deliveries.

Those wishing to become either an in-store shopper or a full-service shopper will be required to be 18 years +. This is open to all types of people that wish to help those in need of food delivery.

Joining Up To Instacart Shopper Jobs

The signup process to become an Instacart shopper is fairly simple. There may have been a time while reading this review, where you may have thought: hey, this website promotes online careers, yet becoming an Instacart shopper does not involve online activities.

Well, I’ve included this opportunity because you do need to sign up online. To begin, head over to the Instacart Shopper signup page here, or download the Instacart driver app from the App Store or the Google Play Store.

Firstly, I must make mention that currently in 2020, Instacart Shopper jobs are only available to those in the US or Canada. Other countries may come soon, but that’s not guaranteed.

So, fill out the application, and a local Instacart team member will review your submission. If you’re approved, you’ll receive a confirmation email with the in-person onboarding session details. All you need to do is select a suitable session date and time from the available slots.

Don’t be too concerned if your application says ‘Awaiting Approval’, this just means a team member has not yet reviewed your application.

Job Tasks

So what is it you’ll actually be doing as an Instacart shopper driver. The ‘full-service shopper’ can begin work whenever the allocated store opens. This may be at 7am, 8am or 9am, maybe even 10am. Typically, grocery stores open earlier rather than later.

This time may not suit your availability, so instead you can work in the afternoon or evenings, up until the grocery store closes.

Orders will become available in the morning and throughout the day, and it’s up to you to accept an order that suits your circumstance. Once an order has been accepted by you, it’s time to go shopping.

Something to note before you begin, is that your customers are encouraged to give you a rating after their experience, so you want to do a good job.

So, you have your order, now you go around the grocery store selecting all the items on the list. You may occasionally find out of stock items, so what do you do? Some customers leave messages on their order to answer these types of issues. Alternatively, you can chat with them on the app or via text as you’re shopping.

Obviously the better job you do in regards to picking the correct items and a prompt delivery service, the better rating you’ll receive from the customer.

Earning Potential With Instacart Shopper

All this sounds fairly good so far, but what is the earning potential with Instacart. Well, it various depending on the following characteristics:

  • Location
  • Role Type
  • Complete Orders
  • Number of items
  • Type of items
  • Driving distance
  • Effort involved

Instacart provides an estimate of what you’ll make with each order, and you can choose to either accept or decline the offer. In-store shoppers are provided with an hourly wage which is detailed in their offer letter.

Instacart doesn’t declare what this hourly rate is, but having seen many of the reviews recently, Its roughly between $15-$20 per order. Depending on how efficient you work, this can mount up quite substantially after a few hours.

If you include the delivery driving option, this is taken into account in your estimated earnings. So even though you’ll be required to pay your own gas costs, this will sort of be compensated in your earnings.

Add to this any tips that customers are willing to pass on, and you could be onto a nice little earner.

Instacart Shopper Reviews

Having browsed through many reviews of Instacart Shopping jobs, most are quite complementary. From over 2K reviews, the collective have given a rating of 3.2 stars out of 5.

I’ve taken a selection of recent reviews which are not biased one way or the other. I would like to point out the last review on this list, which suggests good money can be made because of quarantine conditions with the coronavirus crisis.

Final Thoughts

Although Istracart doesn’t represent an online career, it does provide a great opportunity for those willing to get out and about. You’ll also be helping those vulnerable people that, for one reason or another, cannot leave their home to get essentials.

You will need to sign up online via the Instacart website or downloadable app, which is easily achieved.

If you’re more inclined to stay at home rather than do other people’s shopping to earn a few dollars, you could always try your hand at affiliate marketing. In a way, this is also providing people with their purchasing needs.

You wouldn’t necessarily create a grocery website, but consider what else some people require that they cannot go out for. For instance, you could create a website for elderly needs such as walking sticks/frames or mobility scooters.

Sign up to affiliate programs that sell these items and promote them on your website. When a visitor to your site makes a purchase of a product you’ve promoted, you earn commissions. This is exactly how I make money online, and I learned how to do it here.

You’re not limited to just one niche of products either. There’s a whole range of topics to write about and promote. Camping may by your thing, maybe fishing, golf, cooking, vegan, weight loss, horses, NFL. The potential to offer products to an online audience is endless, and there’s still huge opportunity out there.

This is just food for thought should you be weighing up an Instacart Shopper job or an online version.

Like many people, I struggled in my early attempts to make money online. It's really frustrating when you try product after product, searching for that elusive opportunity that is really genuine.

Eventually though, I learned how to achieve success in the online world with my own website. This website was created to show others how to do it. I direct people away from the poor opportunities and advise the good ones.

But the simplest and least complicated is [Learn more...]
