Update: As a brief update to this article, I just wanted to alert you to the current social impacts that affect MLM opportunities. Multilevel marketing consultants primarily work by hosting house parties to present and demonstrate products to potential customers. As social distancing has become apparent, these hosted house parties or events can no longer go ahead.

Instead, companies with MLM opportunities are turning to sales online to keep their consultants active. What's ironic about this, is that they are basically turning it into an affiliate marketing venture. However, consultants will only be allowed to sell the products of the MLM company they are involved with.

So, the choice now is owning a website and only selling one companies products, or own a website and sell any products you like (eg: traditional affiliate marketing). I know what I'd be choosing!

In fact, in most cases, the MLM company will still own the website. I've seen instances where they will give it to you free for 3 months, then you have to pay for it. eg: domain & hosting fees. This will be on top of other MLM fees. This is not the case with genuine affiliate marketing, where YOU own your own website.

What is Usborne Books

Usborne Books is basically an independent seller of children’s books. The UK company was founded in 1973 by Peter Usborne, and has since gone global with organisations throughout Europe, the USA and Canada.

While the major part of the company is known as Usborne Books, they also have a sister company that allows you to partner with Usborne Books by selling their products. This leg of the company is known as Usborne Books at Home, and provides anyone with the opportunity to make money by selling Usborne children’s books.

The business model for selling Usborne Books is via two methods. There’s the simple commission based sales, where you’ll receive a percentage of each sale. They also have a recruiting model, which is an MLM (Multi Level Marketing) opportunity.

Most MLM business opportunities are usually in the health or beauty sectors. We often hear of people getting involved in selling beauty products, or tupperware. These are traditional MLM schemes. Usborne Books are different in that they offer you the opportunity to sell children’s books, which is actually quite nice.

How To Sell With Usborne Books

The predominant method of selling through Usborne Books is to host a party, and promote the books to the people you invite. This is similar to other hosted parties but instead of selling cosmetics or supplements, you’re selling children’s books. Therefore, your preferred target audience is going to be parents of young children.

To get started, you can purchase a consulting kit. There are 2 kits you can buy to get started, which are as follows:

  • New Consultant Mini Kit ($75 plus tax) – This kit includes 10 different titled books from various popular series, and business supplies to help get started.
  • New Consultant Kit ($125 plus tax) – This is similar to the ‘New Consultant Kit’, but you get 20 titled books from various popular series to promote.

Anyone that wants to purchase these books from you can make an order, and have them shipped. When a purchase is made, you as a consultant, will earn a 25% commission.

The consultant kits become yours to keep, even after promotion.

It does seem that selling to libraries and schools is also allowed, but the commission rate drops to 20% for these organisations. However, you are not allowed to sell to bookshops.

Usborne Books Payment Structure

The alternative way to make money through Usborne Books, is to recruit others to also sell books. This is where the MLM structure kicks in, because it’s a tiered level of selling.

If you recruit someone else to sell Usborne Books, a small commission from each sale that your recruiter makes, will go to you. This is only a small commission, in the range of 3%.

There are also incentives and rewards for achieving specific thresholds. Here’s a brief look at some of the incentives awarded to consultants.

For a more comprehensive read of the full consultants benefits and rewards, you can read the Usborne Consultant Manual here.

MLM Success Is Rare

While I do think this is one of the better MLM schemes out there, unfortunately making money through this type of venture is extremely rare. The MLM model is setup so that those at the pointy end of the structure, make 90% or more of all funds.

As you can see in the image below, those that are just beginning or are not willing to invest much time, money or effort will not make much at all. Even those that do invest as much time as possible, rarely make anywhere near an average wage.

Typical MLM Structure

It’s been reported that over 73% of people that join an MLM scheme either lose money, or make no money at all. The success rate is alarming, and you should really delve into the commission structure and understand it, before committing to such a venture.

Chances of Success

Well….I’m a little on the fence here because I don’t believe there’s much money to be made by joining up with Usborne Books. As an Usborne Books consultant, you’ll make more money by selling their children’s books online. This is basically affiliate marketing. If you’re going to go down that path, you may as well get educated in affiliate marketing and sell more then just books.

Choosing to host parties is going to cost you money before making any profits. On the Usborne Books at Home website, they state that the average home party will only make you $100, out of $400 worth of sales. That’s not an awful lot of money, especially as you usually provide snacks and drinks when hosting a house party.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, the MLM branch is not the best business model to join as a consultant. It’s ideal for those at the top, but those just looking to make a bit of cash will struggle big time. Not only that, you’ll basically be nagging your friends and family to keep purchasing your books. This could push the friendship too far.

So, in my opinion, you’d be joining Usborne Books because you have a passion for selling kids books. Not to make money.

What Products Are Involved

This is what I really like about Usborne Books. As opposed to other MLM schemes that all sell the same type of products, w aren’t really any better than what you’d buy in a department store, Usborne children’s books are uniquely different.

You would be selling something of real value, and these books can be passed on to the next generation. I believe the Usborne family have gone into this business with the right intentions, to provide great stories and education to children.

Usborne Books Reviews

It’s always possible to find reports about a company, so I thought this may be interesting to find out is anyone had joined, and what advice they could offer. I was startled to find this article which gives 10 reasons not to join Usborne Books. I understand that there are always multiple points of view, but this is quite a comprehensive list.

It includes these reasons:

  • You’re told this is not a multi level marketing company, which it is.
  • You’re told these books cannot be found elsewhere, which they can.
  • Becoming an Educational Consultant is not as easy as you think
  • Usborne Books are not unique
  • Unless you recruit and create a downline, don’t expect to make much money.
  • All marketing materials must be purchased by you.
  • You’re told Usborne only has 20,000 active consultants, but many join just to get cheap books.
  • Usborne does not know what kind of company they are.
  • Expect to stay positive no matter what dilemma you encounter.
  • You will be terminated for speaking your mind.

I checked ‘Glassdoor’, a good website where people can leave reviews. Here’s some of what people have been saying about Usborne Books.

Usborne Books Reviews

Clearly it seems like a decent company to work for, but making money is going to be a challenge.

Is Usborne Books a Pyramid Scheme or Scam

No. Usborne Books is not a scam as it’s a legitimate business. Although it does possess a MLM structured level payment plan, it’s not considered a pyramid scheme. Pyramid schemes are illegal because they don’t sell actual products, and the only way to earn money is by recruiting others.

A Better Opportunity to Make Money

Osborne Books is a legitimate company with a business model that provides people to make money. However, I don’t believe you will be satisfied with the amount of money that’s possible to be made. The time and effort you need to put into these parties and events doesn’t seem to match the rewards offered.

This website is dedicated to providing various online opportunities to make money. My 3 preferred models of online wealth creation that I consider to be the best, are affiliate marketing, online dropshipping and selling on Amazon.

You can read my Beginners Step by Step Guide to Affiliate Marketing to get a handle on how this works, then check out my No1 recommended platform to learn where and how to get started. I really like this model because it allows for so much flexibility, and you can scale it depending on how hard you want to work.

Selling on Amazon is a highly successful model to make money online, and my preferred course to learn how to do this is called Search.Find.Buy. It’s run by a fellow called Ben Cummings, and you can read my review of his course here.

Lastly, creating an online store of your own is also a wonderful method of building an income. The dropshipping model has become extremely popular as you don’t need to store inventory. I have gone through and reviewed many courses here and these two are my favourite.

Here’s my review of eCom Success Academy, which is the ultimate in ecommerce dropshipping. Alternatively, a cheaper option is called eCom Lifestyle University, and is brilliant for those with less of a budget.

My Verdict

At the end of the day, we’d all like to make more money right. And we don’t want to work hugely long hours to achieve these results either. I don’t believe Usborne Books will give you that opportunity.

While I do believe Usborne Books to be a genuine family business, there are many other opportunities that will allow you to reach your monetary goals.

Like many people, I struggled in my early attempts to make money online. It's really frustrating when you try product after product, searching for that elusive opportunity that is really genuine.

Eventually though, I learned how to achieve success in the online world with my own website. This website was created to show others how to do it. I direct people away from the poor opportunities and advise the good ones.

But the simplest and least complicated is [Learn more...]
