Vector Marketing MLM Review

Intro.

I recently found an opportunity to sell knives in an MLM scheme. I figured this was more unusual than the typical Tupperware or health supplements MLM, so why not look deeper into it.

This Vector Marketing review will give you an insight into the company structure, and the products they sell.

I’ll declare that I am not a Venture Marketing recruit and have no affiliation with Vector Marketing whatsoever. This review is impartial and based on the knowledge I’ve sourced.

So let’s get started.

What is Vector Marketing

Vector Marketing is a multi level marketing leg of the Cutco Corporation. Cutco are the company behind this organization offshoot which recruits members to sell knives through their MLM scheme.

Cutco Cutlery has been in existence since 1947, yet the Vector Marketing department was only established more recently in 1981. They are a highly successful business with a large distributor base willing to sell their products

Having said that, they do have a fairly chequered past. Several times they have been sued for deceptive recruiting techniques, not paying minimum wages to its sales rep’s, or had class-action lawsuits taken out against them.

Through all this, they have remained a viable company that still recruits distributors to this day. When doing this Vector Marketing review however, I was surprised to find many negative reviews. In fact when I first visited their website, I had a warning appear stating ‘Careful! This site has poor customer ratings’.

Vector Marketing Warning

I use a Chrome extension called ‘Web of Trust’ which indicates trustworthy visited websites. Not a good start to this Vector Marketing review hey!

How To Get Started With Vector Marketing

If you’re a student looking for a side hustle, you are the prime candidate for Vector Marketing. In fact 85% of Vector Marketing distributors are students.

To get started, you’ll be required to enter your ZIP code, which will then trigger a local manager to call you to set up a scheduled time for a meeting. If you get selected to join the Vector Marketing team, you’ll be given 2-3 day unpaid training sessions to teach you how it all works.

Once your training has concluded, you’ll be given a loaned $425 Cutco knife set that you will display and demonstrate to potential customers. Depending on your location and local manager, you could be selling within a couple of days.

Once your days of selling Cutco knives is over, you’ll have to return the knives, unless you decide to purchase them.

Vector Marketing Payment Structure

The details of the Vector Marketing commission structure are not easy to find. However, there is a base salary for sales reps for each appointment they make with customers. They can either take the base rate of $17.25 per appointment, or take 10% of commission from sales generated, whichever is highest.

Depending on the volume of sales you’re able to make, the commission rate will rise. Here’s a breakdown of the commission vs career sales:

  • 0 – 1,000 sales = 10% commission
  • 1,001 – 4,000 sales = 15% commission
  • 4,001 – 7,500 sales = 20% commission
  • 7,501 – 12,000 sales = 25% commission
  • 12,001 – 24,000 sales = 30% commission
  • 24,001+ sales = 30+% commission

These are extremely large sales targets to reach in order to receive higher commissions. Having read some of the reviews from previous Vector marketing sales reps, they were struggling just to get a handful of sales. The main reason being that Cutco knives are too expensive.

MLM Success Is Rare

Multi Level Marketing opportunities have been around for decades now, and they still have the stigma about them from the 1980’s. The reason for this is because it’s widely known that those at the top of the MLM chain make most of the money, while those at the bottom do most of the work.

It’s not easy working for any MLM company, and you usually find they expect more out of you than initial expectations. There are often clauses in contracts that state you need to make a certain number of sales per month to remain an active member, and the stress can be too much for some.

Typical MLM Structure

The success rate for MLM’s is debatable, but experts suggest the failure rate is anywhere between 73% and 99%. Jon M. Taylor MBA, Ph.D., from the Consumer Awareness Institute wrote an article claiming that only 1% of people that sign up with an MLM company make a success from their efforts.

Vector Marketing Products

Cutco doesn’t have a huge range of products, instead they rely on specific products that are benchmark items. Kitchen knives, scissors, sporting knives and gardening tools are what they specialize in selling.

The products are not on the cheap side, but are of extremely good quality. Along with the singular items just mentioned, gift sets, storage and accessories are also available to purchase.

Vector Marketing Cutco Products

Cutco’s precision and quality is very high, with each blade being stamped out of stainless, ground by robots and then sharpened by hand. The stainless steel may not be top of the range, but because they use cryogenic processing, they are able to modify the steel to enhance their performance.

The Truth Behind The Work

Selling products through MLM schemes is not easy. You need to organize house parties and appointments which can take time to manage. They can also cost you money which is not reimbursable, such as travel/fuel or food and drink.

Then you need people to sell to, which may be easier the first time around. Once you’ve sold to your family and close friends though, it becomes extremely difficult to find customers. Even if you do get a few people through the door, selling knives that are out of most peoples price range will be tricky.

You may attempt to try door to door selling, but with the amount of doors that get slammed in your face, you will want thick skin.

Multi Level Marketing is not for everyone, and I’d suggest it’s really only for a select few.

Vector Marketing Reviews

I’ve reviewed several MLM companies before, but I don’t think I’ve come across as many poor reviews. Although I have seen some complementary reviews, many are calling Vector Marketing a scam or just a poo experience working with them.

Consumer Affairs has an overall satisfaction rating for Vector Marketing of under 2 stars, which is based on over 80 reviews. This is a very poor rating for a company that prides itself on ‘a fun place to work’.

If you do decide that Vector Marketing is for you, I’d urge you to read some of the reviews just to give you some idea of what you may be signing up to. Don’t just look at the first few reviews you see, take a good look through several pages.

Is Vector Marketing a Pyramid Scheme

No, Vector Marketing is not a pyramid scheme. As you may be aware, pyramid schemes are illegal in most USA states, along with other parts of the world. These pyramid schemes don’t sell physical products, they are tiered money circulating schemes that eventually collapse.

Vector Marketing does sell quality products, they just do it via a similar tiered level system. The MLM model is not new, and will continue to make companies a lot of money via their sales people.

Is Vector Marketing Legitimate or a Scam

Vector Marketing is not a scam. It’s a legitimate company that has a proven track record for selling all types of knives and sharp tools. Does this mean I’d recommend joining Vector Marketing as a sales distributor? No, I wouldn’t.

I’d you’ve browsed through the reviews mentioned above, you’ll see many of the complaints and trials that people have gone through. MLM companies make selling sound simple, but in reality it’s a lot more difficult.

The statistics show that not many people that join an MLM scheme are successful, and most don’t make more money than their outgoing costs.

What You Should Know

  • Vector Marketing aggressively target students
  • Available in USA, Canada, Germany, Korea & United Kingdom
  • You will need to host knife parties to make sales
  • Travel & party expenses will not be reimbursed
  • After selling to your family, making sales are usually a struggle for most people
  • The MLM success rate is extremely low
